The Best Of The NBA World In 2009-2010

The plot in the world of basketball this season has been so twisted, so convoluted in terms of performances of some players as well as some of the news about particular players, it has made it an exciting game to follow.

Let’s look at some of the highlights of the 09-10 basketball season thus far. We’ll cover some good, as well as some bad here.

The first thing we should recognize is some of the teams that have come out of nowhere and established themselves as very respectable basketball teams. There are two that stand out to me more than any others, and these were both two of the worst teams in the league last season.

The first of the two teams to mention is the Oklahoma City Thunder. No one imagined that they might become this successful in such a short space of time. The team can thank Kevin Durant for helping them to rise out so quickly from being one of the worst teams to being a successful team this season.

Although people had a slight hunch with the Thunder, when it came to The Memphis Grizzlies, no one had ever thought that they would make it this season or any season for that matter.

But now, this team is playing extremely well and it also looks like they might make the playoffs. This is all down to the great team play from OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph.

On the negative side of things, there was the Gilbert Arenas incident that marred the image of the league. Having been caught in the locker room pointing a gun at the teammate, the Washington guard was suspended for the rest of the year and pleaded guilty to felony charges.

It hasn’t been all bad in the world of basketball players though. Take the emergence of a few top rookies like Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, and others, all of who have proven that the league is full of promise with respect to the years that lie ahead.

Nuggets Outlast Blazers In NBA Basketball Action

Carmello Anthony scored 41 points and the Denver Nuggets used a second half comeback to give the Portland Trailblazers a rare 97-94 loss at their Rose Garden Arena home venue on Thursday night. The Blazers held a 67-62 lead heading into the final quarter but for the second time in as many games had trouble putting their opponent away. Brandon Roy led Portland with 30 points, and Greg Oden was the high rebounder for the home team with 9 boards. Portland is now 1-1 on the young NBA season, while Denver improved to 2-0.

NBA pointspread players who took Denver as +8 road underdogs enjoyed their outright victory and the ensuing payday. The Nuggets have covered the number in both of their victories this season, while Portland evened their ATS mark at 1-1. The\’1 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 200. Portland has gone UNDER in both games this season while Denver evened their NBA totals mark at 1-1.

After the game, Anthony was happier about the victory than his personal offensive outburst:

\”We came out here and stole the win. It wasn\’t just an important win. It was a battle.\”

Anthony made 7 of 9 shots from the floor and 9 of 10 free throws in the decisive fourth quarter run:

\”My shots were going in. I was trying to attack. I got to the rim and the foul line.\”

Portland\’s Greg Oden was taking the loss hard, as he missed a couple of late game free throws that could have given the Blazers a lead:

\”This is a tough one. I definitely stepped up there with confidence thinking I was going to hit both and it didn\’t go that way. I put this loss on me. I need to step up and make those.\”

Team leader Brandon Roy said that he\’d give the Blazers\’ big man a pep talk:

\”The biggest thing is to let go. We all miss shots, you\’ve got to forget about it.\”

Roy also added that the choppy pace of the game with a lot of fouls called benefitted Denver playing in back-to-back games:

\”I think it benefited them a bit more coming off a back-to-back. They were tired but anytime you slow the game down that much, it gives them a chance to recover.\”

The Blazers will now head to Texas for a rematch against the Houston Rockets. Portland beat the Rockets to open their NBA season. They\’ll play at Oklahoma City on Sunday before returning home for a game at The Rose Garden against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. Denver will head back to \’The Mile High City\’ for a game against Memphis on Sunday before an east coast road trip with stops in Indiana and New Jersey early next week.

Highlights Anyone Ought To Be Aware Of With Respect To Pro Basketball This Season

The plot in the world of basketball this season has been so twisted, so convoluted in terms of performances of some players as well as some of the news about particular players, it has made it an exciting game to follow.

Let\’s look at some of the highlights of the 09-10 basketball season thus far. We\’ll cover some good, as well as some bad here.

Two teams seem to have appeared from nowhere and stand out due to the fact that last season they were nobodies but this season they have become very successful and are building themselves a decent reputation with every game they play.

First is the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that people believed had a bright future but never thought they would be competitive this quickly. Thanks to superstar Kevin Durant, the team has suddenly morphed from one of the worst in the league to one with a winning record this season.

The second team that seemed to arise from nowhere is The Memphis Grizzlies. These guys are simply shocking, as unlike the Oklahoma City Thunder, people had no idea that this team would ever make it into the season.

Thanks to some great play from Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and OJ Mayo, this is a team playing some very inspired basketball. They may even make the playoffs.

However, the incident at the Gilbert Arenas really brought down the reputation and image of the league itself with guns being pointed at teammates, the Washington Guard has now been suspended for the rest of the season.

It hasn\’t been all bad in the world of basketball players though. Take the emergence of a few top rookies like Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, and others, all of who have proven that the league is full of promise with respect to the years that lie ahead.

The Top 5 NBA Point Guards Since 1985

Many believe that a great basketball franchise starts with its point guard. After all, the man running the show coordinates just about every offensive drive up the court.

The ball distributor sets the tone for a team\’s offense and an apt one is likely to lead his team to success. If he\’s a good defender, he\’ll do even more good for his team.

During the course of the last few decades, some of the greatest point guards to ever play basketball have graced us with their presence. Let\’s have a little fun by ranking the top five athletes in this category, all based on my personal opinion.

Steve Nash. At 35 years old, he\’s seemingly as good as he\’s ever been. Having won two MVP awards, both after the age of 30, Nash has established himself as one of the game\’s greats.

At number four, Chris Paul gets a spot on the list here. He\’s only been in the league for five seasons now, but what an impact he\’s made in that span. He\’s yet to win an MVP award, but he\’s due for one when you consider what he does for his team.

He\’s one of the best defenders at the position to ever play the game, and a shoe in to be near the top of the league in assists each year.

Another one of a kind player very worthy of a spot on this list is Jason Kidd. The modern day triple double king is an anomaly when you consider his ability to rebound despite his height. Kidd is another aging player who hasn\’t slowed down yet.

Number two on the list is a point guard who is one of the best distributors in the history of the sport. Averaging over 10 assists per game during the course of his career, John Stockton was a legend who played past the age of 40, and very competitively at that.

You probably know who number one is, especially since I\’ve mentioned the other four. Magic Johnson is simply the best point guard to ever play the game. His assists per game were higher than anyone on this list, and he\’s the only one here to have won a championship too. Enough said.

Impressive Progress For Knicks

Basketball fans in New York are cautiously optimistic for the first time in what seems like ages. Basketball lovers in the biggest city in the country have been dying to see their beloved Knicks return to a competitive state.

After a full decade of disappointment that saw a losing record in nearly every season, the Knicks have finally begun to clean things up and look like a team that\’s improving for the first time in years. Their losing record of 17-24 might not indicate this, but there are many signs that show nothing but hope based on their current state.

At this current rate, they\’d win several more games than they did last season. This isn\’t the most telling statistic though.

It\’s true that the Knicks are on pace to finish the season with another losing record based on their performance thus far, but we have to look at a little more to acknowledge the extent of their recent improvement.

The more important piece of information to deduce from this has to do with the fact that New York began the season with a 3-11 record. No, you\’re not seeing things. The Knicks have rebounded tremendously since the beginning of the year.

This means that the Knicks have been hovering above the .500 mark since November, and the team is actually playing some solid basketball to back up its performance. There are some promising young players on this team.

Between David Lee and Wilson Chandler, the team has two young talents that any team would be happy to have. Lee may even make this year\’s all star team, as he\’s averaging nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds per night.

Second year player Danilo Gallinari has emerged as one of the best three point shooters in the league, averaging the second highest total three pointers made per game. It\’s clear that this young man from Italy will be a valuable piece of a franchise on the way up.

While this all sounds encouraging, it\’s clearly not enough to tip the scales. There is, however, one more factor. New York will have millions of dollars in freed up salary cap space after the current season ends. As a result, you can expect a star to join this cast of young and talented players in New York. What happens from there is anyone\’s guess, but the upside is obvious.
