The life of composer Sigmund Romberg is not the substance of high tirade, although film shines in production numbers with MGM guest stars. AI Artificial Intelligence – In the near future, scientist Hurt and his team create a greatly advanced android kid who might face feelings, containing love. His adoption by a nice couple who have lost a child is riddled with complications. This enchanting tale draws us in, thanks in part to Osment’s superb performance. Cast includes Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, Frances O’Connor, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Robards, William Hurt, Jake Thomas, Ken Leung, Michael Mantell, and Adrian Grenier. (145 minutes, 2001)
They Only Kill Their Masters – Incredible cast in troubling modem-night thriller set in coastal California town; tries for Daniel Hammett sensation, doesn’t relatively make it. Policeman Garner tries to solve murder of pregnant female, with formidable Doberman pinscher figuring significantly. Not poor, though a disappointment. Cast includes James Garner, Katharine Ross, Hal Holbrook, Harry Guardino, June Allyson, Peter Lawford, and Ann Rutherford. (97 minutes, 1972)
The Choirboys – Purportedly joke adventures of LA. Cops who reduce work pressures by bawdy doings. This is a Foul-mouthed, foul-minded, heavy handed film from story by Joseph Wambaugh, who disavowed this dud. Cast includes Charles Durning, Louis Gossett, Jr., Perry Baron, Clyde Kusatsu, Stephen Macht, Tim McIntire, Randy Quaid, Don Stroud, and James Woods. (119 minutes, 1977)
Rich and Strange – Kendall and Barry, an discontentedly married couple, are given cash and voyage around the world; he has an event with a ”princess,” when she gets to be amorously attached to an explorer. Cast includes Henry Kendall, Joan Barry, Betty Amann, Percy Marmont, and Elsie Randolph. (83 minutes, 1932)
Big Trouble in Little China – Buddy Blowhard trucker Russell finds himself at large in Chinatown, while a buddy’s fiance is kidnapped right in front of his eyes.
